What is Gingival Hyperplasia?

by staff on April 9, 2007

Gingival hyperplasia is a condition characterized by the enlargement, called hyperplasia, of the gingiva, or gums. Gingival hyperplasia is also called excessive gum line.

Some medications such as the anti-convulsive drug phenytoin, the antibiotic cyclosporine and calcium channel blockers can cause gingival hyperplasia. However, the most common cause is poor dental care. Even people who brush and floss correctly after every meal can develop gingival hyperplasia if they do not visit their dentists twice a year for professional cleaning to maintain the mouth’s appearance and overall shape.

Gingival hyperplasia is only one reason why people should see their dentists at least twice a year, but given damage it can cause, it’s a very important reason to stay absolutely current with having your teeth professionally cleaned and examined twice a year.
