How Often Do you Need a Professional Cleaning from your Dental Hygienist

by staff on May 24, 2007

Your dental hygienist is a very important person to see to maintain proper oral hygiene and overall good health.  In fact, regular visits to your dental hygienist can prevent serious dental problems as well as detect health issues in their early stages.

A dental hygienist not only professionally cleans your teeth to remove stubborn plaque and tartar, but is trained in various other medical areas.  Your dental hygienist screens you for oral cancer, which is very curable if diagnosed early.  Gum disease can be treated and even reversed to prevent possible tooth loss.  A key way to prevent gum disease is to brush and floss regularly and go for regular dental cleanings and checkups.  Gum disease has even been linked to potential heart problems.

Your dental hygienist may do scaling in your mouth to remove built up plaque and tartar.  The hygienist may decide to perform root planning to clean your gums and avoid gum disease.  Your dental hygienist will also polish your teeth so that they shine and look great.

It is recommended that you go for dental checkups and visit your dental hygienist every six months to maintain healthy oral hygiene.  However, the dental hygienist will let you know if you require more frequent visits to keep a healthy mouth.
