What Patients Are
Saying...

Ok, I know what all of you are thinking right now, this is just
going to be another unsuccessful dental visit and now I have to
read all corny letters that the staff probably wrote, well listen
up because you are wrong. You are in the right place if you need
help as I did. So just sit back enjoy the cookies they are feeding
you right now and read my story about how successful my visits have
been with Dr. Martin.
I first found out about Dr. Charles Martin & Associates from
an article that my mom had seen in the Richmond Times Dispatch one
Sunday morning. After I read the article, I wanted to find out a
little more about what Dr. Martin could do to help me with my
dental needs. In the past my personal dental experiences at other
oral surgeons did not go the way I had anticipated them to, I
quickly regretted going and wasting my money when I was unhappy
with the work. The dentist usually ended up being an unhelpful old
grouch! They made me feel very comfortable so I did not want to ask
any questions, I felt that if I asked them to explain to me what
was going on I would only bother them and cause them to have to do
more work and waste their time. My first visit to Dr. Martins
office I was a little nervous but after meeting Dr. Martin and some
of this staff I was more comfortable there in a couple of hours
than I was at my family dentist that I had been going to for
years.
The waiting area is very nice also, if you have someone waiting
for you, the staff at Dr. Martin's office makes the wait very
pleasant for them by offering drinks and cookies. They also make
sure that the people waiting are aware of what is happening with
the patient they are waiting on. When I walk in now I feel like I
have known them forever. It is always pleasant to see a beautiful
smile when entering your dentist office. It makes you think “one
day my smile could actually look just like that”.
Everyone in the office has been very helpful in answering all of
my questions and any questions my family had. Upon arriving for my
appointments I am actually asked, “so David do you have any
questions for us today” which makes me feel that they want to know
my cares and concerns.
If I hear anyone talking about needed to get dental work done I
quickly respond by telling he or she about Dr. Charles Martin &
Associates and how pleased I have been with all of the work that I
have had done. So if you are reading this and trying to decide
whether to come here or not I would just like to say that I have
been very happy and have enjoyed getting to know everyone in this
office. I wish them all the best in their dental procedures and may
they be as successful as mine have been since I began going to Dr.
Charles Martin, D.D.S. & Associates.

My Motown Singing Dentist
I learned early to expect pain and to be afraid of the Dentist.
I had to have three teeth removed. I had double teeth and a cavity
in one of those. This work was done when I was eleven years old.
This was my first trip to the Dentist and it was not pleasant. I
cried before, during, and after this visit. So I learned early to
stay away from the dentist.
I started losing my teeth in the back of my mouth first. This
didn’t really bother me until I realized you could see the empty
spaces when I smiled or laughed. This was making me self-conscious.
I began practicing how to laugh and smile without opening my mouth
so as not to show my missing teeth. I also started being envious of
people who could smile and laugh showing their teeth. I actually
found myself watching other people’s teeth.
Fear continued to keep me away from the Dentist. I continued to
see Dr. Martin’s advertisements and one touched me. The
advertisement told how Dr. Martin had given abused women their
smile back. Well, I thought a dentist with a heart.
I called the office/ got an appointment and found very friendly
and competent support staff. I had a couple of them Carey and Roz
sweating bullets trying to do an x-ray. These two were having such
a difficult time because of a very large bone in the top of my
mouth. They kept me comfortable and got the x-ray done. I later met
my dentist who sang and hummed Motown songs as he looked around in
my mouth.
No matter how bad I thought things were, Dr. Martin had a plan
to help me. I needed gum grafts, four implants, three wisdom teeth
removed, two bridges and oh, yeah removal of that large bone in the
top of my mouth.
It was two weeks before Christmas when we decided to proceed
with treatment. Dr. Martin told me we can go ahead and get the gum
grafts at the top, the four implants, and oh yes, remove the large
bone from the top of my mouth. I agreed but told Dr. Martin that I
had to be able to go to work over the Christmas holidays, because I
had people that worked wit me who were already crying about the
Christmas schedule. I had to be at work as scheduled, the only
excuse for me missing work would be death.
Dr. Martin scheduled me to come in on a Saturday morning, he
completed all of that dental work and I was able to talk to him
while he worked. His wonderful assistants kept me comfortable the
whole time. (Thanks Jamie and Roz)
Well, I returned to work the following Wednesday. I told my
story to everyone and showed them my mouth. Friends and family have
been amazed at how well it all went with no swelling, a quick
recovery, and little if no pain. It all has been simply amazing. I
have more dental work to be done, but I am no longer afraid.
My thanks to all of you.
Mr. Ree Ellis all out to deliver
outstanding care.

I have had extensive dental treatment done by Dr. Charles
Martin, including caps, implants, root canals and tooth
extractions. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this office a 10
+.
Dr. Martin has made my mouth look excellent and my experience in
this office was exceptional. I have only had two dentists work in
my mouth ever. Dr. Martin’s work is the best. I would not change to
another dentist.
I would rate this office as highly professional. The staff will
do anything they need to do for the patient from a dental
standpoint; they are excellent. Everyone here is very professional
and you can tell they are going all out to deliver outstanding
care.
Dr. Martin wants you to feel comfortable. All of my treatment
was very successful and at no time did I feel any pain. I recommend
this practice to everyone. I am very, very satisfied with my dental
care.
Everything was wrong with my
teeth...
Due to bad experiences in dental offices, I had stayed away from
the dentist for years. Then the general condition of my teeth began
bothering me and I was having trouble chewing, eating, and became
very uncomfortable.
I have had a lot of dental work done by Dr. Charles Martin,
including implants, bridges, and crowns. Almost every one of my
teeth has needed work done to them.
I had a lot of not so good dental work prior to coming to Dr.
Martin. I would rate this office a 10! My teeth look and feel
great. I get lots of comments and compliments. I can’t say it was a
pleasant experience as there is some discomfort involved, but it
has never been painful. Dr. Martin always made me feel very
comfortable.
My experiences in this office have been very good. The rapport
that Dr. Martin has with me and his other patients is excellent.
Dr. Martin has an outstanding chair side manner. He is not critical
with the patient. The way he treats people and his patients is
exceptional.
I actually chose Dr. Martin’s office on a random kind of
selection. After one visit I knew this was the right place. My
teeth were so horrible, but Dr. Martin did not have a hint of
admonishment or sarcasm. He has always approached it from the
viewpoint of “OK, here is the situation and here is what we can
do.”
I truly believe Dr. Charles Martin is a craftsman. I honestly
had not been able to chew with my teeth on both sides for twenty
years …till now. There is no doubt I would recommend and do
recommend Dr. Martin.
Everyone in this office is extremely professional and pleasant
to deal with. Staff make an attempt to know you. One other thing
I’d like to mention is that I have never waited for an appointment.
When my appointment is at 8 a.m.- it may be a few minutes, but I am
back there on time.
I would rate the quality of care superb. The staff is very
professional and friendly. Dr. Martin sets a high standard for the
practice and you can see it in the staff that work with you. Julie
and Lisa have been extremely helpful and taken good care of me. It
would be hard for someone to convince me there is a better dentist.
I am a true fan of Dr. Charles Martin and Associates.
Listen to what Chad Fleetwood had to
say about his life changing experience.
I chose this dental office because my wife was a patient here. I
am not sure why she initially chose this office but I think that
the appearance of the building had a lot to do with it. A routine
dental cleaning was what initially brought me to Dr. Charles Martin
and Associates. During that visit, the doctor recommended that I
have an occlusal equilibration done.
The treatment itself was very comfortable and Dr. Charles Martin
explained the new techniques to me in great detail that I was not
familiar with. It was painless.
This dental office as a whole seems more professional,
organized, and relaxed than other offices I have been in. The
doctors and staff seem to be more qualified and more knowledgeable
on dental procedures than most dentists. I have always been praised
about how clean my teeth were, but no other dentist had ever made
me aware of the problems with my bite that were causing me so much
pain.
Dr. Martin and his staff have made me feel extremely comfortable
at all of my visits. The treatment itself was very comfortable and
very painless.
The occlusal equilibration has changed my life. I have
recommended the office of Dr. Charles Martin to several people and
will continue to do so because of the dramatic change that I have
had in my life since my first visit. My constant headaches are gone
and I sleep a lot better that I have ever slept. I used to wake up
every morning fatigued. I just thought it would be like that for
the rest of my life and now with my dental treatment, that is no
longer true.
Obviously I am a true fan of this dental practice.
Mr. Albert Odom Jr. will tell you
himself!. Listen to what he wants you to know.
I originally came into this office for the free evaluation to
see what was needed to fix my mouth. At other dental offices they
sent me here and there to get different things done, but here
everything was accomplished at one place. Prior to coming here no
other dentist had told me of my gum infection. Dr. Martin diagnosed
some things that other dentists had not picked up on.
I have had periodontal work, extractions, and dentures done
here. I look great. Well, I think I look great. I am really
impressed with the dentures. They are a great match or color-coded,
however you guys do it.
As far as I am concerned, there are no other dentists except for
Dr. Charles Martin and Associates. I had surgery at 9:00 a.m. and
then in the evening after the surgery, Dr. Martin called me to see
how I was feeling. It blew my mind that he called and that he
really cared.
You know its funny. When I come to this office, it’s almost like
coming home. Everyone is so friendly and so professional. This is
hard to find, but you guys have it.
Everybody in this office is totally involved with you as soon as
you walk through the door. From the receptionist to the hygienist,
everyone is like family- everyone cares. It’s like I’m at home and
Dr. Martin could be my brother or a buddy of mine. He is very kind
and funny and you really don’t feel like you are at a dentist
office. Simple as that!
In regard to the dental treatment, there was no pain at all,
none whatsoever. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Charles Martin’s
group is the only dentist office in Virginia. I rate this facility
off the scale. Everything about this place just blew my socks
off.
My comments are truthful and come from my heart. They come from
being a part of this excellent dental office, and this is something
other people should experience at Dr. Charles Martin’s office.
Barbara McCabe wasn't happy with her
dentures.
My first introduction to Dr. Charles Martin & Associates was
when Alden Aaroe on WRNL was advertising about Friendly, Gentle
Dentistry and dental implants. This was early in 1990 on the WRNL
radio show that I listened to every morning.
I decided to call since I was having problems with the pain in
my jawbone because of my bottom dentures. I called for my free
consultation and that is when I fell in love with Dr. Charles
Martin as well as his staff.
I decided to replace my lower dentures with implants and that
was the greatest thing I ever did. No more pain. When Dr. Martin
was getting me ready for my implants my husband, who was in a
wheelchair due to a tumor on the spine, had a tooth to abscess on a
Sunday morning. I called Dr. Martin for help and he said to meet
him at the office as soon as possible. When we got to the office
Dr. Martin was waiting for us and in his haste to help us he had
locked his keys in the car. He did not realize this until he had
attended to my husband and relieved him of his pain, so we drove
him to his house to get car keys and then took him back to the
office.
I had nine years of the wonderful feeling of natural teeth, but
as with all good things - that came to an end. The implants had to
be replaced with new teeth on a post for the lower dentures and I
also had to get a new upper denture. The material used in the
second set was no way close to the natural feel and the fix of the
first set of dentures.
When I got my first set of dentures Dr. Martin would not hear of
using the word “guke” which stands for an adhesive cream that holds
dentures in place. The dentures were fitted so that you did not
have to use any type of adhesive cream. Those were the best years
because of the implants and the way the upper dentures fit. The
worst thing I have to say with the second set of denture is that I
had to use an adhesive cream all the time.
I still tell everyone that inquires that as a dentist Dr.
Charles Martin is the best ever and I love him dearly. He is the
best.
Mrs. M. B. feels implants transformed more than just her
health.
"Before my implants I was so afraid of losing what ridge I did
have. The operation was not at all bad and with the help of Dr.
Martin and his wonderful staff I felt like I was the only patient
they had. Implants have certainly improved my mouth, eating and my
looks. Yes! I would do it again. Thank you so much for piece of
mind."

A word of thanks to Dr. Martin and a recommendation to others
who may be thinking of restoring their teeth, but have reservations
about taking this route.
When I was born the good teeth gene was missing from my gene
pool. I grew up during hard times when dental hygiene was not a
priority. Surviving was the most important thing. With my uneven,
crooked teeth my smile was always covered with my hand. One of the
first things I did when I went to work was to have my front teeth
caped. Now I could smile.
Over the years I spend a lot of time in the dentist chair. My
dread of having to have dentures was a constant nightmare for me.
Then it happened! My teeth started breaking off. Just broke right
off when I was chewing something. The first one I put into a small
cup in the medicine cabinet, and the next one and etc. Why I saved
them I do not know. Perhaps it was my way of thinking they were not
really gone. My dentist at that time did not know what to do. I
went to different dentists, one for this problem, one for another
problem. Some teeth were extracted. Then the gum disease started.
So I said to myself, this is serious. Your entire health could be
in jeopardy.
Serious action had to be taken. I still had the teeth in my
medicine cabinet, the teeth I was losing were getting closer to the
front of my mouth and my smiles was in danger, in addition to my
health.
Implants seemed a possibility. I read about Dr. Charles Martin
and his work with implants. An appointment was made wit him. I was
very impressed. He would do all the work in his office, the
permanent bridges, implants, fillings, root work, gum restoring,
etc. No going from dentist to dentist. I liked that. The sign at
his office said “friendly, gentle dentistry” O.K, I thought he is
definitely friendly and the others in the office also, and he
seemed gentle. On a second visit, Dr. Martin explained in detail,
with pictures and video, the procedure for the implants and other
work.
I agreed to have the work done, and I will admit I was nervous
and apprehensive. My trips to dentists before had not been
reassuring for me, but this was different. Dr. Martin lived up to
the sign that said “gentle” and now he could add to this
“painless”.
Dentistry has made amazing progress in the last years, and it is
great to have a dentist who keeps up with them, and continues to do
so. I now have teeth to chew with and a smile that I am proud of. I
still have those teeth in a cup in my medicine cabinet. I think I
can dispose of them now.
Mrs. B. P. wanted more than
traditional solutions -- they hadn't worked.
"After having had a bridge that failed, I fought for at least
three years having any extensive dental work. In the meantime, I
had heard my sister exclaim over and over how pleased she was with
her implants. So, I went with her to see Dr. Martin and I began to
think. In two days time, I made the decision to go for it. One week
later, I became the owner of three implants. It was no problem - in
fact, much easier than some of my previous root canals. I healed
rapidly without pain and I have had wonderful care and support from
Dr. Martin and his staff."
R. P. of Glen Allen was put at ease
and is very pleased with the cosmetic results.
I am very satisfied with the cosmetic treatment plan performed
on my teeth to improve my smile. I had crowns, bonding and bite
adjustments done. My dentist is a truly talented and professional
dentist. His friendly staff put me at ease during the procedure and
his chair-side manner is gentle and supportive. I will continue to
have all my dental work done by him. I have received compliments
from friends and family about my improved and natural-looking
smile. Thanks for everything!
Aida Ziadch experienced a confidence
boost.
I would like to thank my doctor and his assistant Jenny for the
cosmetic work performed on my teeth. My friends have noticed how I
tend to smile more effervescently. I owe this to my increased level
of self esteem from your professionalism. I just want to thank you
again for your outstanding performance on my dental work.
Sandia Beatley of Richmond found the
experience exceptional and finds her sisters envious.
I am very pleased with the result of my porcelain veneers. My
doctor has made my smile whiter and brighter. My sisters are
envious and old friends tell me how great I look. Everyone is very
nice and professional. The staff at Dr. Charles Martin &
Associates will work with you in any way they can. I highly
recommend their staff to all my friends and family. My experiences
have been delightful!
Christine Kolle of Richmond expected
a lot and got more.
Dear doctors and staff at Dr. Charles Martin & Associates.
Thank you for all the hard work you put into my new smile! You were
all so wonderful to make me feel like the work I had done was the
most important appointment of your day. Your attention to detail
and humor were much appreciated. I will highly recommend your
office to anyone. I think my teeth speak for themselves.
Cleve Barret of Raleigh didn't like
dental visits; what a change!
I just wanted to take this opportunity to inform you that I,
being a new customer effective May 1997, have had the most
pleasurable experience at you dental office. While everyone has
been most pleasant, my doctor and his assistant Jamie deserve the
highest praise. What was so impressive about them was their
courteous and friendly nature, professionalism and the dedication
to their jobs. They are both perfectionists in that they would not
settle for anything else than a 100% job well-done and total
patient satisfaction. To complete my dental plan I had a full mouth
x-ray, cleaning, bleaching, five crowns, a bridge and my bite
adjusted. Where most people in general do not like dental visits
(one being me), I can truthfully say without hesitation that I
looked forward to each and every visit. I am 100% satisfied with
the results. I will refer people to Dr. Charles Martin &
Associates at every opportunity presented.

Bea Parrish as to how I
look--absolutely beautiful.
I first came to Dr. Charles Martin because my sister had been
there and she had successful implants done. She thought Dr. Martin
should look at me because I had lost a bridge. So I came in with
her and soon I was also getting implants.
My treatment and procedures by Dr. Martin include three
implants. That was about 10 years ago. They have been absolutely
wonderful, not the first minutes trouble with them.
I also have a bridge. My bridge had a tooth that abscessed and
the root canal was not successful. There is only 1 tooth of that
remaining now. I have been worried about giving up that bridge. On
a scale of 1 – 10, I give my treatment and Dr. Martin a 10. I have
been very pleased with my results.
And as to how I look --- I think my six new crowns across the
front are absolutely beautiful. I would best describe my dental
experience in this office as very pleasing and very good. I rate
this office as excellent, both the doctors and the staff.
I would say that going through the process of the six new crowns
was a little more than the three implants because I had been sick a
lot this winter. And I am about 10 –12 years older. However, Dr.
Martin makes you feel more than comfortable during the
procedures.
I do recommend this practice whenever people tell me they need a
dentist. I say, “You need to see my dentist, Dr. Charles Martin on
Huguenot Road.”
I do not know enough adjectives to describe this dental office.
I am very satisfied and would rate this office, doctors, and staff
as excellent in every way.
There are a lot of the staff that have been very helpful to me.
Of course, Lisa has been here longer than most of the staff. I
consider her and some of the other girls that are no longer here
very dear friends. I still remember Dr. Martin’s assistant during
the implants, I can’t remember her name but she was excellent too.
So I would say I have had wonderful care all around and I
appreciate it very much.
Kent Lewis, Executive The staff in

Joe Gilboy I have great faith in Dr.

"I have had a very difficult case because I had no more back
teeth. And the remaining teeth that I had in the front I had
grinded them down so badly that my bite was off. I had a bad habit
of grinding my teeth at night. I needed quite a bit of work. Dr.
Martin is extremely skilled. He and the staff made me feel very
comfortable. Even though I was very scared he talked to me and
explained what he was doing. He was very sweet. If I had any
questions he answered them. If I needed a break, he gave me a
break. He was very understanding, especially with me being very
scared. Dr. Martin also made me feel comfortable in anything you
need. He works with you instead of you having to work with him. He
can prescribe something to make it easier if you are scared. You
don't feel like you are being rushed in and rushed out. Thank you.
I feel good about myself. He did a great job. I am now sending my
kids here as well."
Brigitta Cunningham was very
understanding
" The doctors and staff have done an excellent job to ensure I
felt no pain and explained every step throughout the procedure to
make me feel relaxed and comfortable."

" My experience is that this is the best dental office I have

doctors and staff definitely know their business and they answered
all my questions. I recommend your practice. You can call me a true

Gwynn Stastny quality of care is

"I had been terrified of going to the dentist for as long a I
could remember. The older I got, the worse my fears got, so I
simply quit going. Needless to say, my teeth and gums steadily
deteriorated to the point where I had no choice but to do
something. I scheduled a consultation with Dr. Martin and left his
office feeling impressed and very much at ease. Subsequently, Dr.
Martin and his staff performed extensive dental work on me and I
can honestly say I experienced little or no discomfort. Almost a
year and many visits later, I now view going to see Dr. Martin and
his staff as going to see friends. Dr. Martin has truly given me
something to smile about and something to smile with."

"Your office is excellent and I have the fullest confidence in
your doctors. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give you a TEN ALL THE WAY. I
generally do not return to an office if the staff are not good, as
I've had bad experiences with dentists, but that is not the case
with Dr. Martin's office. I have had a lot of treatment -crowns,
periodontal work, fillings and cleanings. When asked about my
dentist - I tell them always that I have a GREAT dentist. You
should come and find out for yourself.
Ken Barber come and find out for

" Throughout the years, I've done everything from cleanings to
replacing old fillings, to root canals to veneers and most
recently, implants. I've been very well taken care of at Dr.
Martin's. I would rate the office a" Ten". The doctors and staff
here are very good, very congenial, friendly and very concerned
about your welfare -about how you are doing and if all is ok. Over
the years I've been in different dental offices I have seen many
different staff - this is by far the best staff around. I'm treated
like a person not a number. When I had my recent implant work with
Dr. Martin he made me very comfortable, answered all my questions.
I am very pleased and satisfied with the results.

I was very pleased with the results and impressed by the
dentist’s skills. It’s so nice to be able to eat an ear of corn and
chew on a spare- rib bone. And it’s a relief to smile without any
embarrassment.

I first came to see Dr. Charles Martin sometime last year. I am
seventeen years old and I walked through the door expecting to make
an appointment, but the front desk staff informed me that they
could work me in that afternoon. I was so afraid because my prior
experiences with dentists were not pleasant memories and I thought
I would surely undergo another bad one.
Well, Cary, the hygienist gently comforted me and escorted me
inside. The visit was pain free and the receptionists, assistants,
and dentists have been extremely friendly and have accommodated all
my dental needs and desires.
Thank you to the staff of this wonderful office. As a result of
my experience here, I am no longer afraid of visiting the dentist,
OR at least this one.
Ammie Mitchell Tinsley
What I Like About My Dental Office and the Supporting Staff
I really do not know where to start. I have so many fond and
pleasant memories. I will start by stating my very first visit was
on an emergency basis; a cracked molar. The tooth had to be
extracted and the removal was painless. I was shocked when I gauged
my level of pain after removal versus the level of pain I
experienced before removal. Painless!!!! The cause of the break- -
-a peanut- - -airline variety. When I fly anywhere now, pretzels
are my preferred snack of choice.
During my follow-up visits and cleaning. I became aware that
stress was causing me to grind my teeth back into my gums.
Hopefully as I remove the stress from my life, I will see what you
guys can do about the damage caused to my gums.
I also have tried the teeth whitening system. This system does
make a real difference in achieving a brighter and whiter smile. By
the way, I want to thank the Spy Squad for their help in making
sure I received their whitening package in Texas.
I also found a brand of toothpaste that did not make me gag or
sick on the stomach. The name of it is Breath RX and it is
wonderful. I have allergies and all of the regular toothpastes I
have tried had alcohol in them. There probably is nothing wrong
with alcohol unless you are like me- - allergic to its raw
components. I like this toothpaste so much that I purchase it two
and three tubes at a time so I never run out.
Please keep on doing this outstanding work for me and the
community. God Bless you and your staff. I hope to see all of you
very soon.
Ana Mahoney
A simple story, actually. Like you, I don’t like the smell or
sounds of the dentist’s office. I don’t appreciate much the thought
of reclining in the chair with my mouth pried open and my entire
face subjected to a blinding spotlight. I wince at the thought of
those bursts of cold air and squirts of icy water. I gag at the
thought of suction tubes that parch my tongue dry at only certain
sports. Worst of all, I cringe (you do too, I know you do!) at the
sound of a sharp, metallic, whizzing instrument so familiar at the
dentists’ offices. The sound is one thing, the feeling of it
against my teeth sends shivers down my spine and the smell of
something slightly burning does it. I do not like to go to the
dentist! So why did I end up going to Dr. Charles Martin’s dental
practice? Well, I had heard from a friend that he is supposed to be
a very good dentist and that his staff is very friendly and
accommodating.
I first took my two guinea pig sons for their regular dental
checkup and cleanings. Both my 10 year old and 8 year old fared
pretty well, and I took notice at the fact that they did not
complain or fret. It seemed to me that by their reaction, they had
received the “friendly and gentle” dentistry that the practice
seems to offer. After some additional questioning in the car on our
way home, both kids told me that it was not a big deal and that the
fluoride (they always had a hard time with that) tasted better.
They told me that the assistants that treated them were “cool”
(“and one was pretty”) plus they got some dental goodies to take
home.
So, I went ahead and scheduled my appointment. I brush regularly
and maintain a healthy diet, so I didn’t expect things to be too
bad. After the routine checking and cleaning, Dr. Martin had me
open my mouth. Tip, tip, tap, tap (you know, that
darn-metal-sharp-hooked instrument that goes
into-around-about-and-in-between your teeth). The silence, the
humming, then the dreadful sentence…”We have a lot to do”. Now it
was my turn for silence…and I just did not understand. As I
perceived the background musical score of “Jaws” in my mind, I
started to hear of how my bite had eroded tremendously my previous
dental work, causing bacteria to do some hefty damage. This meant
several extended visits and a LOT of work to avoid further decay.
Even though I was not thrilled about the unavoidable dental work, I
decided to get to it before I succumbed to any further discomfort
or pain. Additionally, it was already November and in order to have
my insurance coverage, all the procedures would need to be
completed by year’s end.
I expressed these concerns to the staff, and was assisted very
effectively both, in finding adequate blocks of time that fit into
MY schedule and in the processing of the predetermination
assessment required by my insurance company. I have not received
that kind of support regarding insurance claims and submission of
special reports from any other medical office, dental or otherwise,
and believe it only fair to express my gratitude to the staff for
helping me energetically and efficiently resolve those issues.
In addition, I had a personal situation with my 4-year-old
daughter that would have pressed me to cancel my appointments and
delay the entire dental procedure, certainly past the year’s end
deadline. However, the staff’s willingness to accommodate my needs
allowed me to proceed, and for their gracious care and
understanding my daughter and I are both thankful.
As to the wincing, piercing, gagging and whizzing aspect of my
experience, I would like to say that none of it existed. But these
all seem to be inevitable part of dentistry (at least in the
civilized part of the world). I do however want to stress that I
was always CONSIDERED, in every aspect and at every part of the
procedures. This means that my questions were listened to and
answered. I was regularly asked about my level of sensitivity or
discomfort and the necessary measures required were taken in order
to provide me with as comfortable an experience as possible. Having
experienced different dentists and practices, I have found that Dr.
Martin IS an excellent dentist and that his assistants and
administrative staff ARE friendly and gentle as claimed.
I am still undergoing final adjustments to my original scheduled
dental procedures. However, I am also considering going forward on
other cosmetic dental treatments and this can only happen in my
case because I am thoroughly pleased with the kind of dental work
and treatment I have received (remember, I do not frequent
dentists’ offices out of pleasure!) Lastly, my husband is
scheduling his appointment shortly, and I can assure him that 2
dentist-apprehensive kids and 1 dentist-hysterical wife can attest
that his dental experience will be a success!

It has been a pleasure dealing with Dr. Charles Martin, D.D.S.
& Associates. I have been a patient at this office for many
years. Everyone is professional and friendly and made me feel good
about having extensive dental work done.
It has been an expensive experience, however I have most of my
own teeth and not dentures. I did feel self-conscious when I first
came to the office, but once I had crowns put on my smile is
wonderful.
As far as surgical procedures go, I have not had a bad
experience. Everything always went well and god only knows how much
work I have had. My last encounter was an implant on the lower left
of my mouth. At first, I thought I would be going into surgery with
a cover over my face, but after about ten minutes I knew I would be
okay and I was. I had hardly any discomfort that day or the next. A
few Advil took care of that.
The final results are great! New bridge and new tooth! A
beautiful smile! What more could you ask for!
Dr. Martin is a caring and excellent dentist. Anyone thinking
about getting or needing an implant should go for it. Do this
instead of pulling your teeth and you will not regret it.
AND you are in good hands with Dr. Charles Martin

Having less than optimum dental care in my early childhood, the
result was a great deal of tooth decay in many of my teeth. I lost
a couple of my permanent teeth early on. My other teeth have
required very much dental work through the years.
I have been a patient of Dr. Charles Martin for twenty-two years
so the vast majority of my lifetime dental care has been performed
by him.
I have had an array of dental procedures performed by him; from
fillings and crowns, a bridge to a root canal (which I might add
did not live up to its painful reputation), and gum grafts to
correct damaged and receding gum tissue from my improper brushing
techniques.
From the very beginning I had confidence in Dr. Martin’s dental
skills and through the years I have observed him continually take
advanced education and teach dental procedures. Dr. Martin is a
dentist who strives to be in the forefront of dentistry and
provides the highest standard of care as pain free as possible.
Recently Dr. Martin “installed” two permanent dental implants in
my mouth. In this procedure the implants are permanently attached
in the bone of the jaw and through the gum tissue. I expected
considerable pain as a result of this procedure. However, as a
result of Dr. Martin’s skill, care and expertise, I was elated when
the only medication required for me after this procedure was only
one Advil to knock down a low level of discomfort. I was more than
pleased with the way this procedure went. It pays to have a
competent, skilled dentist!
In addition to Dr. Martins’ competent skills is his winning
friendly personality, his competent friendly staff and his well
equipped facilities resulting in all the elements needed to meet
any dental need. That is why I’ve been his patient for twenty-two
years and will continue to be his patient in the future.

My husband Ronnie was the first one to see Dr. Charles Martin.
He had gum disease. Dr. Martin used laser treatments with really
good results. It was also relatively painless and he saw
improvement right away. Ronnie insisted I go see Dr. Martin and the
“Gentle” part of “Friendly, Gentle Dentistry was suddenly very
appealing.
To say I had bad teeth is an understatement. I had a terrible
overbite with gaps between my teeth. I guess I would be described
with “buck teeth” (how I hate that). I had braces when I was in my
20’s but didn’t wear my retainer like I should have and they slowly
moved back. The only thing I can say to try to explain this is like
someone who loses a lot of weight and thinks life will be better.
But it is not because the weight wasn’t the problem to begin
with.
So the following years I neglected my teeth, taking minimal care
of them and avoiding the dentist unless absolutely necessary. I
hated the way I looked but felt so ashamed for letting my teeth go
back the way they were. It was easier just to ignore them.
My first visit with Dr. Charles Martin was awful because I hated
being there and facing the music, but I must say Dr. Martin was not
judgmental. I had gum disease and also needed the laser treatments.
Dr. Martin came up with a treatment plan to rebuild my mouth, but
it was expensive and long-term and I could not commit to it.
After a couple of years I realized that I had to do something.
By this time the original treatment plan was no longer good. Not
only did I have the very unattractive front teeth, but now my jaw
teeth were in such bad shape they couldn’t be saved. Dr. Martin did
not give up on me. We started a plan that included implants and
braces. It was expensive and long-term, but if I didn’t do this
dentures were in my not too distant future. I would hear people
with dentures say, “do what you have to do to keep your teeth”. I
don’t think I have ever met anyone who says I love my dentures.
There were also people who said to me, “I can’t believe you would
go thru all this and spend all this money on your teeth, I would
have my teeth pulled first.” Most of these people have good teeth
and beautiful smiles and will never be faced with this
decision.
My story has a very happy ending. I now have a beautiful smile.
Because of the implants, I have strong jaw teeth that allow me to
eat any thing I want. I can’t tell you how much my implants feel
like natural teeth. It was a lot of money but the end result is
priceless to me now. When I smile or meet new people I don’t worry
what they are thinking about my teeth. As a matter of fact the best
thing I can say is I don’t think about my teeth much at all.
I know my having a healthy mouth and pretty smile was (almost)
as important to Dr. Martin as to me. I feel very lucky to have
found him because I don’t think there are very many dentists
(anywhere) as good as he is with implants. So thanks a lot Dr.
Martin for working with us in so many ways to see this thru. And
thanks to your office staff and assistants who always took very
good care of me.
I would strongly recommend Dr. Charles Martin and staff to
anyone looking for a dentist. And the worse your problem is - the
more you need them. Maybe I’ll see you there. I’ll be the one with
the BIG SMILE.
Bruce Evans
Before coming to see Dr. Charles Martin my mouth was in horrible
shape. I needed an immense amount of dental work and rarely smiled.
In fact when I did smile, little children would run screaming from
the room out of fear and women would recoil in horror. I was
ashamed and embarrassed to open my mouth.
In an attempt to find a competent dentist, I happened across Dr.
Charles Martin, D.D.S. & Associates ad in the yellow pages.
Upon calling his office I spoke extensively with a patient
coordinator who assured me that Dr. Martin would be able to help
me. When I first saw the office I was very impressed with its
understated opulence.
I believe the staff did a very comprehensive evaluation of my
dental status at which point we discussed fees. At first I thought
the fees were excessive, but have come to realize that like most
things in life you get what you pay for. There are no free lunches.
I believe that I received excellent care that was well worth the
fees.
The difference between the dentists I have seen previously and
Dr. Charles Martin is dramatic. Dr. Martin exuded hope and optimism
and was very personable while at the same time being professional
and reassuring. Because I am still in the midst of some procedures
I cannot comment on the long-term results but I feel confident that
the lasting result will be outstanding.
I now am proud of my smile and do smile frequently. Dr. Martin’s
entire staff has always been wonderful and are an incredible asset
to Dr. Martin. These staff members go out of the way to make
patients comfortable and all have incredible personalities. ALL of
them are incredible, personable and competent. I have deep
admiration for them.
Most of the procedures were totally pain free. Once I had some
post procedure pain where I had a little difficulty but Dr. Martin
prescribed something that dealt with that and make me comfortable.
I would definitely go through the processes again and I have my
entire family going to Dr. Charles Martin now.
I always recommend him to others. I am confident with my new
smile and enjoy going to the dentist rather than dreading it the
way I used to.
Candace Banks
When I was born with deformed hands and a cleft lip palate, my
mother faced the challenges of seeking the best plastic surgery and
restorative work in the country. She found atop notch doctors at
one of the best medical centers in the 50’s, Duke Hospital. I had 2
to 3 operations every year until I was 6 years ole, several of them
to repair my lip and palate. After that my mother continued to push
for excellence and never allowed me to say, “I can’t”. She taught
me piano and passed on the family tradition of gospel singing with
me and my 3 sisters. When I wanted to be in the school band, there
was only one instrument I could try with my finger and mouth
difficulties. So of course, she bought me a $500.00 baritone horn
and encouraged me to earn first chair.
My dental work as a pre-teen included extensive extractions and
“heavy metal” braces that was the only option. I was still going
back and forth to Duke a 200 mile trip for orthodontic care and
still receiving the most innovative treatment. I remember getting a
“panorex” x-ray with one of the very first machine invented. All of
this resulted in an exceptional outcome with a permanent bridge
across my top front teeth and a speech pattern that was good enough
to lead the debate club. You could say that my early dentistry
though quite involved, set my expectations very high.
As an adult, I had few problems for all of my 20’s and 30’s.
Then in my mid 40’s, the bridge that had been put on at age 16, was
no longer feasible. I knew I was losing one of the “anchor” teeth
and now faced a dilemma. The options were explored as I was being
treated for routine care at MCV dental school. Least expensive
would be a removable plate, but that would be somewhat removable,
uncomfortable, and could affect my singing and public speaking.
Implants were one possibility, but that would be very expensive and
maybe not successful with my congenital bone deformities. The best
option seemed to be to replace the bridge, still an expensive
option and would mean comprising another tooth for an anchor. But
my life style and smile would be optimal.
The next question was who could do the best job? I know from my
experience at MCV that the teaching doctors were the best I would
be able to find; so I chose Dr. Charles Martin and Associates based
on that and the hope that I could work our finances and time
needed.
From the first visit to this office, I felt completely at ease
with all my potential problems and was eager to get started. The
office worked out a payment plan for what my insurance would not
cover. My doctor was friendly and extremely careful in all parts of
the procedures. I had always been very sensitive to needles and
novacaine in the front of my mouth. The scar tissue was so tender
that most of the time when I got a needle there I would be crying
and gripping the chair in pain. This time, the doctor was so expert
in technique that I said I hoped ever one of his students would
learn how he did it. I never felt pain and I cried from relief and
amazement at how easy it was.
My new bridge exceeded my expectation in comfort, fit and
appearance. Suddenly I got compliments on my smile and I sang and
spoke perfectly. I could not give my recommendation to any other
dental practice, but Dr. Charles Martin and Associates has
definitely made a positive “note” in my life.
Catherine Dodson
I made the initial call to Dr. Charles Martin, D.D.S., &
Associates because my gums were swollen and bleeding and my dentist
at that time said, “Oh, it’s no big deal.” Well, I knew it was a
big deal, especially since I am a diabetic.
I was concerned, I wanted a dentist that I felt comfortable
with. So I looked in the telephone book and everything fit. My
concerns were addressed in the yellow page ad and the location was
good for me.
My first impression of the office was that it was very nice.
Everyone there has always been very nice and very friendly.
My treatment at this office has included a couple of root
canals, laser surgery, and my follow up continuing care visits. You
name it and I have probably had it. I have been a patient since
1994 I think.
My treatment and appointments have always gone smooth, because
right up front I told the doctors that I am going to watch
everything you do, how you do it, and I want to know why you are
doing it, or I won’t let you do it. Both of the dentists I have had
here said, “Okay, fine.” My comfort level during and after the
procedures was fine, I was a little sore for a day after the last
root canal but that was to be expected. I feel the quality of care
I have received here has been excellent.
What I like most about continuing to receive dental care from
Dr. Charles Martin, D.D.S., & Associates is that they keep me
informed. I know what they are going to do and why it needs to be
done. In other words, they don’t just jump in and start doing
things. I am kept informed from the beginning of my visit to the
end. This keeps me at ease, however they usually surprised when I
ask for a mirror so I can actually watch what they are doing.
When I speak with people who are looking for a great quality
dentist, people who are not just looking for the cheapest but know
that they want a really good dentist, I tell them to come here. I
have shared my experiences with others, I am not sure if they have
called, but I have told them what I think.
I am pleased with my smile and I do smile all the time. I do
think this office has helped me overcome any dental fears I may
have had.
Kat & Darren Swords
Dr. Charles Martin saved my husband’s life. I know that sounds
dramatic, but it is true. When we first met Dr. Martin and his
wonderful staff, Darren was extremely fearful of the dentist, had
extensive periodontal disease, smoked over a pack of cigarettes
each day and was 37 years old.
On our initial visit with Dr. Martin he informed us of the
procedures and prosthetics available today, and explained to us our
options, from the least expensive and simplest, to the complicated
and more costly, and provided all the information needed for Darren
and I to make some very difficult decisions. Darren also would need
to stop smoking for Dr. Martin to perform the work. One week later
Darren stopped smoking!
After an extensive and thorough evaluation, it was determined
that none of his teeth could be saved. As you can imagine, this was
devastating news for my husband, but with Dr. Martin’s guidance and
support, we were able to choose a treatment plan that was right for
Darren’s needs and our budget.
Darren chose implants with a permanent bridge on the lower jaw,
and custom dentures on the top. Yes, implants are costly, but we
took into consideration several factors. First, besides being
beautiful to look at, implants preserve the bone of the jaw, and
dramatically improve the functioning of chewing. Second, when it
came to financing, we bought cars that cost as much, but only last
for five years! Implants last a lifetime. Finally, while it was
difficult for Darren to spend that much money on himself, he
wouldn’t have questioned spending the money if myself or our son
needed some type of prosthetic, so with the family’s encouragement
and support the decision was made.
Over the last eighteen months Darren has been through multiple
dental extractions and surgeries. While these procedures can be
painful, they also require patience and adjustment. Dr. Martin and
his staff were always available by phone and appointment when they
were needed. Managing Darren’s comfort and fears was always their
top priority.
As a registered nurse myself, I have met and worked with many,
many physicians. Dr. Martin and his staff are outstanding in their
field. They balance skill, compassion, humor, and the latest in
medical technology. Now that his periodontal disease is cured and
he no longer smokes, I know he’ll be around a long, long time for
me to see his beautiful smile.
David Ellis The doctors and staff
here are very good, very congenial
I have had a lot of dental work done in this office, everything
from cleanings to replacing old fillings and taking care of some
new ones. I had a broken tooth that was very well taken care of; it
was a much better experience than I had anticipated it would be.
That tooth required a crown and a root canal. I’ve had a lot of
veneers put in to repair teeth that were damaged.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this office a 9 or
10ish.
I am very pleased with the way I look. The doctors and staff are
very good – also very congenial and friendly. They were very
concerned about how I was feeling and making sure everything was
going okay from my viewpoint.
Over the years I have been to other dentists, some who did a
good job also, but the staff here is the best I have ever seen in a
dental office.
Some doctors didn’t make me feel very comfortable. Dr. Martin
and the other doctors make sure that you feel comfortable. They
talk to you and treat you like a person, not like a number.
Two major treatments I had were my implants and veneers, plus
the crowns. The treatment process was really pretty good. It was
explained to me in advance in great detail of what was going to be
done. They told me the stages of how the treatment would occur. The
veneers I was not worried about. However the thought of my jaws
being cut for the implants bothered me at first, but Dr. Martin
made me very comfortable with it.
I would definitely recommend this practice. I am very satisfied
with everything.
In all my experiences in the office, the one thing that was
truly not satisfactory is that during the implant process a piece
of cotton was left under my gum line when it was stitched back up.
I started getting a fever so by advice began treating it like an
infection. I did call Dr. Martin, but he was not in that day. The
doctor on call called me back that weekend and prescribed an
antibiotic for me. I started taking it but didn’t seem to be
getting any better so I called Dr. Martin the next week and they
got me in pretty quickly. Dr. Martin found the piece of cotton was
pushing the sutures apart and this had started making the gum line
recede. He did pull it out and it did close up. But I think it
appeared to make my gum line at a lower level that originally
stitched back up. To me there is a slight dip on that side. People
don’t notice, it is on the bottom left at the gum line. It makes me
wonder how it would look if that hadn’t happened and how straight
it would have looked compared to now.
I just want to add that the staff in general has been very, very
good – helpful and friendly. One of the things that make this
office so much more incredible than any other office is the
willingness to help me with my paperwork and insurance claims. So
many offices say, “I will file it for you”, but if there is any
problems you have to deal with it. Maybe they don’t use those
terms, but that is what happens. Frankly, I don’t have the
knowledge to deal with insurance. I don’t know what I need to tell
them clinically to fight it and I don’t have a history of what
they’ve paid on or haven’t. The staff here, especially Deb has been
so helpful with working through Cigna. They have really helped me
getting paid on stuff that I would have probably fought for months
or years on to get paid. This makes the whole dental experience so
much better.
Debbie Hamlett
Due to my husband’s company transferring him to the Richmond
Area we had to find new physicians for our medical and dental care.
Since I had to quit my job, I didn’t have any insurance and we had
to wait until I became employed to start looking. My insurance went
into effect 90 days after finding employment, which meant it had
been 6 months since I had been to a dentist.
Years before I had to have periodontal surgery so I knew I
needed to be seen on a regular basis. Now being one of many people
who are terrified of dentists, I was really concerned about who we
would go to. Being new to the area and not knowing anyone, I went
to the yellow pages in the telephone book. I read several ads in
the yellow pages but was really impressed with the ad by Dr.
Charles Martin & Associates. It was so friendly and welcoming
that I called their number. The receptionist that I talked to was
so pleasant, polite and helpful that I thought if she is this way,
surely the dentists in the office had to be too.
On my first visit there, I was very impressed by the waiting
room, the “homey” atmosphere, and the cleanliness and layout of the
rooms. The staff welcomed me with smiles and made me feel like I
had been coming there forever. They took me at my appointed time
and I did not have to wait at all. The hygienist and dentist went
over everything they were going to do, explained it in detail and
made sure I didn’t have any questions.
After they finished with the procedures the hygienist walked me
out to the checkout area, scheduled my next appointment and turned
me over to the treatment coordinator. They filed the insurance part
for me and informed me of why my co-pay part was.
Everyone that I have met in the office has been very friendly
and genuinely concerned about my dental care. When there are things
that I can do better in helping to keep my teeth clean, they let
you know in a very friendly way. You don’t feel like you are being
fussed at when they talk to you.
Another thing that I like is that you feel like you are the only
patient that they have. They never rush you or seem to be in a
hurry to cut your time short. I could recommend Dr. Charles Martin
and his staff to everyone I know that needed good dental care.
Delores Birchett
I had temporary caps applied to my top two front teeth earlier
in my life after an unfortunate situation caused my teeth to break.
The teeth next to those were not uniform in width and Dr. Charles
Martin explained to me the aesthetic benefit of capping all four
front teeth. On a scale of one to ten I rate my results beyond the
scale! I definitely like how I look.
I would best describe my dental experience at Dr. Martin’s
office as the best you could ever acquire anywhere. I’d had a
negative experience in a dental office in the past, so I came in
with some reservations; however, I must say they were immediately
laid to rest.
The staff and doctors are so friendly and they make you feel
very reassured and comfortable. I would rate the quality of care I
received as top notch. They put the patients interests first. All
of the staff are very professional yet also courteous and
compassionate which means a lot. I was treated as an individual –
that alone makes you feel very special. And I was kept very
comfortable during the entire procedure.
I am a true fan of Dr. Martin. I have and will continue to
recommend Dr. Charles Martin and Associates dental office to
everyone.
I think a lot of people have reservations when it comes to
having dental procedures done. Well if these people would just once
call and schedule a tour through the office to see the staff
working they would feel the friendliness and compassion and their
fears would just vanish. It has been one of the most positive
medical experiences I have ever had.
Just the other day while looking for a parking place in a lot, I
smiled at a passerby and did not think anything more of it. When I
returned to my car the man had left a note on my car commenting on
my “amazing smile” and thanked me for sharing it with him. A
confident smile makes all of the difference!
Dorothy S. Jones
I inherited Dr. Charles Martin when he took over my dentists’
practice in 1979. Since that first visit he has been helping me
maintain good dental health with numerous procedures. I have been
impressed by his pursuit of knowledge in new techniques. He has
been a pioneer in the area of dental implants.
A number of fillings and crowns in my mouth give testimony to
Dr. Martin’s high standard of excellence. Approximately fifteen
years ago he did a fabulous job of veneer work that has results in
my having beautiful front teeth as an octogenarian.
I remind Dr. Martin of my expected exalted status as one of his
charter patients. I feel fortunate to be in his good hands.
Emily Carter
Prior to making the decision to come to the office, I would
compare others’ smiles to my smile. During the comparison I would
focus on teeth color and structure, wishing my teeth were that
white (most of my comparisons were from the T.V.). I frequently
would think about someone I worked with, when she was told by
someone “you got some big teeth but they are nice and white”. I
would buy tooth paste which stated on the label that it contained a
whitener, also I needed a mouth wash because of my breath and I was
very self conscious about speaking or smiling because of my
breath.
On my first visit to Dr. Charles Martin and Associates I was
comfortable because I had observed the professionalism and warmth
when I took my spouse there. Never was I skeptical about the
treatment as I was shown a diagram of what needed to be done along
with the discussion and I also had all my questions answered as we
talked. The fees on the other hand was somewhat shocking at first,
but I had the opportunity to sit with the Doctor and prioritize my
dental work and set up a payment plan that worked for me.
I am pleased with my treatment. Appointments were set up to meet
my needs. My treatment improved my looks in that my teeth color
changes. My teeth are no longer dull or gray looking and they are
not uneven, in essence they don’t look like canine teeth.
As for the different procedures, an explanation of what was to
be done was always given to me before any procedure was started.
During the process I was always asked if I was okay. I would just
nod yes, as I could not talk. Upon completion of all procedures, I
was always given aftercare instructions in case there might be any
discomfort. If the procedure was in depth Dr. Martin would call my
home to check on me and give me his phone number just in case in
problem arose.
I am very pleased with my smile, no bad breath, minimal use of
any mouthwash and mints. Before I had more mints in my pocket that
I had money. I do feel good about how I look, above all I love my
teeth color as this has improved my looks tremendously.
If I had not received treatment from this office, I would have
been trying to get appointments at the dental school and would be
going back and forth twice a week two hours a day for 2 to 3 years
being passed from student to resident before my procedures would be
completed.
I would tell someone who could be helped by Dr. Charles Martin
and Associates to give them a try. You will like the results. I
frequently get compliments about the whiteness and structure of my
teeth and I let them know all about my dentist.
Fern S. Lane
Most of my life (I am 72), I have had one problem or another
with my teeth, however I am fortunate not to have experienced gum
disease. From early childhood on, I have spent much time in dental
offices. Brushing was done frequently, maybe not correctly, but
flossing was not a regular habit.
In the late 90’s I came to see Dr. Charles Martin and
Associates. I was wearing my second set of dentures – full upper
with lower partial. The first set was made in the early 80’s. The
second set about 1996. The first fit well and looked ok. The second
set did not fit and looked like false teeth. My four front lower
teeth were my only remaining natural teeth and they were very sharp
and painful. I had been advised that crowns were not an option.
Everything had been done that could be done so extraction and more
false teeth was the recommended treatment.
My first visit to this office I received a complete exam,
evaluation, options, treatment plan and cost. The treatment
included a new upper denture and a lower partial with crowns on the
four painful lower teeth. I am very pleased with the results. Since
this was done I have had other problems occasionally, which have
been skillfully and promptly resolved.
I like Dr. Charles Martin and Associates because of the
expertise, friendliness and cleanliness. Emergencies are given
prompt attention. Also, several Hokies work there!
My advise to everyone is to seek quality dental care (like that
at Dr. Charles Martins office) early in life and keep it up. Today
one does not have to have root canals without novacaine like I did
years ago.
Gisele Haynes
I first came to Dr. Charles Martin and Associates because I was
looking for hygiene for my teeth. My son works at this dental
office and he said I should come there so my first visit was for a
general cleaning and check up.
My first impression of this dental office was that it was very
pleasant and the people were very nice.
I am not a person who is really afraid of the dentist, but I
don’t really care to have people poking around in my mouth. Then
one day I was eating something and I don’t know what happened but
my jaw went way out of wack. I was very much in pain with a bad
headache and I could not even eat. I came in and saw Dr. Charles
Gooss and he knew right away what was wrong.
I was having a TMJ problem and he made me a little appliance for
my bite and every day after that it got better and better. I don’t
have any problem with that now. Once in a while it will start to
bother me again and I will sleep in that little appliance and then
everything will be fine again.
I have had two wisdom teeth pulled out and that was at the time
that I was having so much jaw pain and I have had some fillings. I
did not feel any pain at all during these procedures. Everyone was
very nice and kept me very comfortable.
Oh, I just love the staff members and the doctors here. The way
they treat you is just wonderful. I used to go to some other
dentists and they were certainly not as friendly. This office is
definitely nicer. I can tell that they really like knowing their
patients.
I will continue to have my dental care at Dr. Charles Martin and
Associates and I will tell others that this is a very good dental
office where they make you feel good when you come in. And it sure
does not look like any other dentist place, it is very warm and
comfortable.
People have to go to the dentist, but it is nice to find one
where I can tell people not to be afraid to go there. That you will
be taken care of and you will have absolutely no pain as they know
what they are doing and how to ease your fears.
Gudi Moye
Let me start by saying: “I don’t like going to the Dentist”. So,
needless to say I did not go as often as I should have. My last
dentist was horrible. He didn’t do a good job. He did not even try
to make me feel comfortable in any way and his accounting office
did not file the claims with my insurance in a timely manner.
I finally had enough and decided to find another dentist. None
of my friends could recommend a “good” dentist, so I picked up the
yellow pages and started looking. Dr. Martin’s ad looked the best
and when I called to get more information, the lady on the other
end was so friendly and helpful, that I made an appointment on the
spot.
That was the best move I’ve ever made!
I was very nervous the day of my first appointment, but as soon
as I walked in the door, everybody welcomed me with a friendly word
and a warm smile. Dr. Martin and assistant both made me feel
extremely comfortable. The most important thing was their sense of
humor. In fact, not only did Dr. Martin tell great jokes, he even
sang to me.
He’s always upbeat and positive, all of which makes me even more
relaxed. Dr. Martin was very understanding of my needs and I have
never felt more confidence in a dentist.
I’ve been with Dr. Martin since 2000 and in those 4 years I
needed a lot of dental work done (mostly crowns). Dr. Martin and
his “Crew” managed to keep me laughing and in good spirits
throughout the whole time. The claims were filled with no delay and
the payment plan his office offered worked out very well. My
overall experience with Dr. Martin and his staff has been the best
ever.
I found “MY” dentist and I know if you try Dr. Charles Martin,
you will have found yours too. I guarantee it.
Hamilton Robinson my best yet
I have been a patient of Dr. Charles Martin since 1995. Friendly
Gentle Dentistry aptly describes Dr. Martin and his competent
staff’s caring treatment of their patients.
I especially appreciate how Dr. Martin thoroughly explains your
dental needs, and recommends applicable dental procedures with
options and their related fees. He patiently answers your questions
in a manner you will understand.
Dr. Martin schedules patients, allowing ample time to complete
the planned procedures unhurriedly. I have had some bad experience
with other dentist that schedule patients like an assembly line,
more concerned with adhering to their schedule than providing
proper treatment to their patients.
I have had several dental implants successfully done by Dr.
Martin. Although this requires major surgery, Dr. Martin’s calm
reassurance and competence allayed my apprehension. He performed
these procedures using the latest dental technology with skill and
care. During these procedures I experienced only slight discomfort
and pain. I now enjoy unrestricted chewing and an enhanced
smile.
I am seventy-three years old and have had lots of dental
treatments. Dr. Martin has provided me with the best dental care I
have ever experienced. I recommend Dr. Charles Martin without any
reservation to anyone seeking dental care.
Heather Pennington, Age 12
My name is Heather Pennington and I had dental work on my two
front teeth. I chipped my teeth in the third grade at the pool. I
was racing a friend to the other side of the pool without goggles.
All of a sudden I lifted my head to get a breath and “BOOM”, I hit
the cement side of the pool. I lifted myself out of the pool and
felt my teeth. I didn’t cry and I didn’t feel hurt, but once I felt
chipped teeth I was really scared.
We went home and decided that we needed to go to the dentist.
Over the years I wasn’t scared of smiling or talking, but now I
felt embarrassed. When we went to Dr. Charles Martin and Associates
it was nice and comfortable. They have a television and toys to
entertain kids.
I was kind of scared because I thought they would pluck my teeth
out and put new ones in. They called my name and I followed the
dentist into the long hallway to my room. I sat in a dental chair
and first they had to clean around my teeth. After that they numbed
by mouth and then it was down to work. They made sure that there
were no cavities and then they put caps where my teeth were
chipped.
When it was all over I felt so relieved. It went great and the
only thing that hurt even a little was when they numbed me, but it
was great afterwards. I love my new teeth and the smooth feeling I
now get when my tongue goes across them. So congrats to Dr. Charles
W. Martin for my new and improved teeth!
Hilda Wilson
At age 70, my dental concerns were more about chewing than about
smiling. With improper care as a youngster, I lost a number of
teeth interfering with my chewing surfaces. As the last chewing
surface went, I was forced to make some replacement choices.
After some discussions with other dentists, I resorted to the
telephone directory. “Friendly, Gentle, Dentistry” appealed to me.
At that point it was Dr. Charles Martin to the rescue.
We discussed an overall dental plan. My requirement for
satisfaction was that I not have any removable dental parts. Dr.
Martin obliged. It involved 5 implants and at least 6 crowns –
extensive and expensive work. I needed confidence and money! Dr.
Martin’s staff, whom I experienced to be not only friendly to me,
but also pleasant to each other (a comforting situation to a new
patient) helped build my confidence in Dr. Martin.
At first the whole procedure seemed too expensive. Eventually
after researching I found these prices to be comparable and decided
dental care to be as valuable to one’s health as any other part of
the body. So the contract was signed.
Dr. Martin approached the task, confidently, patiently, and
gently. He smiled, he hummed, and he talked our way through each
procedure. He was so confident about his good work that he earned
himself the title “Dr. Smart” by the end of the job.
Yes, I am very happy to have had the work done and I would
repeat the decision.
Now at age 73, I am smiling – I can eat apples, carrots, and
celery as easily as I can bananas. It makes me feel so healthy.
Thanks crew!

Dear Dr. Charles Martin,
I have forgotten who recommended me to you, but it must have
been 16 or 17 years ago. Your office then was on Forrest Hill
Avenue.
I had some gum trouble that needed correcting with some extra
good teeth cleaning. You have provided this for all of these years
and I am grateful to you and your staff for the good professional
care you have always provided for me.
Most Sincerely.
Jason Winebarger
Dr. Charles Martin and Associates dentist office has made quite
a few additions and improvements to their customer services that
are very unique. For example, they have added a self- playing grand
piano, play station, and internet access for customers while
waiting in the lobby. They also serve coffee and cookies.
I was given a headset to listen to music with a multitude of
choices while I was having my teeth cleaned. I received a soothing
paraffin wax treatment for dry skin on my hands after the hygienist
was finished with my teeth. I have never been to any dentist office
with such pampering services for patients. It all makes going to
the dentist a much more pleasant experience.
Additionally, the dental care that I have received has always
been very professional with the latest high tech dental equipment,
which I might add is always very clean. The computer screen where
you view your x-rays was interesting and fast.
I highly recommend Dr. Charles Martin & Associates.
Johnny Walker
In May of 1995, I was relocated to Richmond by my employer,
Ethyl Corporation. I had lived in St. Louis, MO all of my adult
life until then; and had enjoyed a very rich, full and healthy
life. While I was a little nervous about leaving the life and city
that I had grown to love, I welcomed the challenges and new
experiences that I anticipated the move would afford me.
After being here for a little over a year, I began to notice a
constant fatigue which grew more and more prevalent each day. At
first I wasn’t too alarmed. I assumed that I was still adjusting to
all the changes, or perhaps I was stressed a little more than
normal at work. However, as time passed, the fatigue got more
severe. Then one night, (without any previous warning), I was
awaken by the most excruciating back pains. When I asked my
roommate to check it out, he noticed that my back was completely
red and covered with very painful blisters. My doctor determined it
was shingles, and immediately ran a series of tests to determine
the cause. In about a week or so I was informed that I had
contracted what is arguably the most dreadful terminal disease. I
was devastated…
The following months were filled with every imaginable emotion.
After a while though, I accepted my fate; and set out on a crash
course of determining what it was I needed to do to make the best
of the situation. I found a Specialist that I was comfortable with,
so I made her my new Primary Physician. She was (and still is) a
very knowledgeable and caring person; and after a lot of one-on-one
attention, convinced me that I wasn’t going to die in a few months.
On the contrary, she assured me that I would be around for a very
long time, depending on how well I followed the course of action
she plotted for me. After that, I was hooked. I wanted to live…and
I did everything in my power to facilitate that.
During one of my regular check-ups, my doctor noticed that I had
some dental work that needed to be completed, and suggested that I
get it taken care of as soon as possible as part of my overall
health regimen. I knew that I needed the work, and I had planned to
get it done; but in light of everything that had happened, I had
totally abandoned the idea. Besides, I had friends in similar
situations who had shared their “horror stories” about seeking
medical and dental attention. Most of them resorted to
non-disclosure, or they didn’t seek any help at all. (I was still
at a loss about what to do about my situation). Subsequently, after
a lot of coaxing my doctor convinced me that times had changed, and
I agreed to locate a dentist and get the work done.
My first instinct was to ask some of my co-workers for a
referral. Then I realized that the secret of my condition might
somehow be discovered. As a result, I decided to randomly select a
dentist from the Yellow Pages, and take my chances. I had narrowed
it down to a few choices when as I noticed an ad in the local
newspaper that really caught my attention. It said “For Friendly,
Gentle Dentistry visit Dr. Charles Martin & Associates”. I
don’t know what it was about that ad that attracted me so… but it
did. My next step was to ask around at work to make sure that no
one there was using the same Dentist. Once I felt confident that
none of them were, I reluctantly called Dr. Martin’s office and
made an appointment. The young lady who answered my call was
surprisingly courteous and helpful, and she made me feel a little
at ease. However, my overall feelings were totally dichotomous. On
one hand, I had a real “warm and fuzzy” feeling about the whole
situation; yet on the other, I felt totally detached and isolated.
So for the next few days leading up to my appointment, I wrestled
with anxiety, anticipation and too many other emotions to
mention.
Finally, the day of my appointment arrived. I thought I was
going to hyper-ventilate as I drove to the office, but somehow I
made it there without incidence. Immediately after I signed in, I
was greeted by a most pleasant lady who escorted me to a vacant
office where I would meet Dr. Martin for a consultation. As I sat
there my insides were a mess, but I did my best to maintain my
composure on the outside. One thing that made my short wait a lot
less nerve-wracking was how nice, friendly and courteous everyone
there seemed to be. My first thought was that it just part of their
“make-up” to support the ad campaign; but after a short while I
realized they were really genuine. I must confess that I was
thoroughly pleased…and slowly but surely, I began to relax.
A few minutes later a lady came in to discuss financing, and
shortly thereafter, Dr. Martin jovially walked in. He was totally
different from what I had expected, but for some unexplainable
reason, it was okay. Just like the finance lady, he was very
thorough, considerate and understanding. He made me feel that he
really had my best interest at heart. I was so overwhelmed with how
nice everyone had been that I completely forgot about mentioning my
medical situation. And though it was clearly noted on the forms
that I had just completed, for some reason Dr. Martin didn’t
mention it either. I was a bit perplexed, but somehow I felt
comfortable. At that moment I told him of my condition, and he
nonchalantly said, “yeah, I noticed”, and proceeded to discuss
other things. I was so amazed by his indifference or ‘lack of
shock’ about what I had just told him that I didn’t know what to
think next. All I know is that I finally felt that I had definitely
made the right choice. After agreeing to a treatment modality, I
left the office and eagerly looked forward to getting started.
Over the years, I’ve had a lot of extensive (and expensive) work
done. Dr. Martin’s skills and expertise are second to none; and his
chair-side manners are noteworthy. SOME OF HIS JOKES ARE EVEN
FUNNY! There has been an ever-evolving cast of players in Dr.
Martin’s office. I can truly attest that I have never had an
unpleasant experience with any of them. Instead, I have been
completely satisfied with the level of personal attention and
service they have extended to me. In my opinion, Dr. Martin has
assembled the best staff in the world. Everyone exhibits the same
caring attitude and gentle nature as he does, and genuinely seem to
put the patients’ interests first. This is true for both the
clinical staff and the business staff. Everyone is top-notch…and I
really appreciate that. A special thanks to Mike Haynes for working
so diligently to help me figure out how to pay for all the work; to
all of the hygienists that have made me stick to my schedules; and
everyone at the front desks for simply being so great.
Finally, it may seem a bit of an oxymoron to say that I always
look forward to my next visit, but it’s true. Thanks to Dr. Martin
and his staff, I have never felt like I’m the patient with the
dreaded disease. Instead I’ve always felt like I’m ‘just Johnny’.
That’s the best feeling in the world. I feel truly blessed.
Keep up the good work.
Kenneth Schoen
My name is Kenneth Schoen and I am a transplanted yankee who
traveled from Massachusetts to work for First & Merchants
National Bank (remember that name???) on 12th and Main Streets
right after Christmas of 1982. The only thing I knew about Richmond
was how to get here (i.e.. Interstate 95) and the businesses that
were on Main Street. So when I asked around the F&M Trust
Department who my co-workers used for dental service several people
mentioned Dr. Charles Martin.
And since he had an office a few blocks down on Main Street it
was very convenient to walk to an appointment during the day. One
day in 1983 the close proximity of his office to my workplace paid
big dividends when I experienced a ruptured wisdom tooth and had to
make an emergency trip to his office. After several shots of
Novocain and my fair share of nitrous oxide the Dr. Payne was
finally able to drill the tooth into pieces and remove it. To this
day I still remember the look on his face when after several
unsuccessful attempts to snap the tooth off he turned to me and
said (with much exasperation)…well I’m glad you think it’s
funny!!!
Dr. Martin didn’t stay in that office for long, but even though
I lived in the West End (and still do) and worked in Richmond I
thought so highly of the quality of his work that I followed him to
his “new” south side office on Forest Avenue and then to his “taj
mahal” currently located on Huguenot Road.
During the 90’s I went to work for United Airline in their world
headquarters building on the western outskirts of Chicago. So again
I found myself having to make inquires of my co-workers regarding
dental providers. I found one that had a small, select cliental and
was willing to take me on for an initial cleaning appointment. He
later admitted that he was not sure he would see me on a regular
basis because I told him I had rotated ever three months with a
periodontist when I was in Richmond. I guess he thought my mouth
would be a mess. He told me after the first appointment that he was
surprised at the quality of my dental work. He was particularly
impressed with a three-quarters gold crown that Dr. Martin had made
for a tight spot in my mouth that a conventional crown could not
have fit in.
When I was a young boy I fell in love with baseball cards and
the pink bubble gum that came with the packs of cards.
Unfortunately, I was not quite so enamored with brushing my teeth.
Therefore, Dr. Martin had many silver fillings to replace in my
moth during the last two decades. And with all the work he has done
I have never had to go back to have a filling or crown replaced
that wore our prematurely. Now that is the best testimonial of
all!
Which brings me to one final point. Dr. Charles Martin seems to
me to be constantly searching for better ways to do his job. I
don’t sense that any complacency setting in like it might with
other professional service providers who shy away from traveling to
seminars and conventions, as they get older. I would recommend the
service of Dr. Martin and his staff to anyone who seeks high
quality dental care using the latest technology.

From a very young age I dreaded going to the dentist. I later
became even more fearful as a car accident damaged my front teeth
resulting in nerve damage. Even a routine teeth cleaning was
painful as my gums and teeth were very sensitive. I always had to
ask for something to numb my teeth so I would not feel
anything.
Then I moved from New Jersey to Richmond and the worst thing
happened. My front teeth began to loosen and affect my speech. It
became very difficult to pronounce certain words correctly. Then I
knew I had to find the best dentist, one who I could trust to fix
the problem and fix it with NO PAIN. He needed to be an expert.
Thanks to the good Lord above, I received a very attractive
letter from Dr. Charles Martin & Associates, Friendly Gentle
Dentistry and the words caught my attention. At that time I was
desperate to have this problem resolved and feel good about myself
again.
I was very impressed on my first visit. The staff was very
friendly. I especially remember how they greeted me smiling and
made me feel very relaxed. I did not have to wait at my
appointment, as they were right on time.
Dr. Martin answered every question I had about the procedures
necessary to correct the problem. I immediately trusted him and the
end result; well I now have six beautiful porcelain teeth in front.
My beautiful smile not only looks good but has proven to be such an
improvement to my self-image. I sometimes speak to groups and now I
am not the least bit embarrassed to open my mouth. In fact my new
look as give me so much confidence.
So THANK YOU Dr. Martin and your entire staff. You have helped
me conquer the fear of dentist visits; in fact I have shared my
experiences with several of my friends. I just love to sit in your
beautiful foyer listing to the music coming from the baby grand
piano. Every visit to your office is a happy time relaxing,
enjoying treats, and chatting with friends (your staff). I call it
“my trip to Italy without the cost of a plan ticket”.
Linda Chalkley
Having lost our dentist, Dr. Michael Sanford to pancreatic
cancer, my husband called your office for an appointment and was
impressed; he suggested to me that I would like the format there
too. I did not come to your office for any of the cosmetic
procedures; I came looking for a good dentist like Michael Sanford.
. .
Although most people choose the dentist or physician based on
the recommendation of their insurance carrier for these services, I
agreed with Dr. Sanford, who was not in the NETWORK. The insurance
company was not the dentist and therefore, the payment of services
should be based on the dentists’ decision on what procedures were
necessary to relieve pain or discomfort rather than what the
insurance felt was reasonable cost or opposition to materials
chosen by the dentist. Reliable doctors or dentists would consider
the patient. Not just use something that works a short while and
may cause future problems and possibly another visit or procedure
that may cost even more. Without insurance helping pay for the
dental or medical work people would more than likely not get
anything done unless they were in so much pain that somehow they
would beg or borrow the needed dollars to relieve the problem. Dr.
Sanford worked with us to give us good to excellent dental services
while also being able to help keep the insurance satisfied and
paying for necessary work.
The dentist I consulted with before I came to your office worked
with the insurance carrier. I visited this dentist every six months
as prescribed by insurance regulations and he suggested that one of
my teeth that had had a root canal should have a crown, and
explained the procedure. As well as I remember the insurance
company recommended extraction if the tooth became a problem. My
experience with the cleaning by the hygienist and by the dentist
when the hygienist was not available was not pleasant. I would
leave with all my teeth feeling sore.
In the two years that I visited that office I was not told or
shown any of the information that your associates shared with me
before doing my crown work. I have found your office staff to be
interested in me. Even though I am not the only patient being seen
I feel that I could be. Everyone seems interested in how I am
doing, THAT concern makes a patient feel ALMOST GOOD about paying
what the insurance won’t pay because I chose not to use a NETWORK
DENTIST. Most of the time when I leave I’m not uncomfortable. If a
problem comes about after leaving, if at all possible, it is taken
care of ASAP.
I have recommended others to the office of Dr. Charles Martin
and Associates.
Lisa O’Rourke
Hello, my name is Lisa and boy oh boy do I have a story to tell
you. I was 18 years old the last time I went to see a dentist and I
am now 36. I broke one of my back teeth on a piece of candy. My
boyfriend was already coming to see Dr. Charles Martin and I had
gone with him when he had his appointments. I really, really liked
them, so when this happened to me he said call 320-6800, and I
did.
I called late in the afternoon somewhere around 5:00 to 5:30
p.m., scared and worried. One of the front staff answered and
worked me in first thing the following morning. I was still scared
when I got there, however the warm receptionist with the piano
playing in the background made me feel somewhat better right
away.
I was escorted to the back and when I met Dr. Charles Gooss he
was kind, gentle, and very careful not to hurt me in anyway. I had
to have a root canal that day, but there was no pain at all during
or after the procedure. I even went back to work that
afternoon.
Well once Dr. Gooss got my teeth somewhat straight , I was then
able to see Carey, one of the hygienist. She told me that I needed
not just a cleaning, but a root scaling on my whole mouth which
sounded “real scary” to me. She told me that it might be tender for
a day or so, but once again there was no pain during or after. When
Carey was through I could feel my teeth again! Keep in mind it had
been 18 years with no dental work at all. I once again had shape to
my teeth and my bad breath went away immediately.
I guess at some point this story must end, but I could tell you
even more. If you are scared, worried, or nervous about seeing a
dentist just remember what you have just read. You will be fine!
Just go for it.
Mary D.
I can’t really recall what year I started coming to Dr. Charles
Martin’s office, but I think it was the very end of the nineties. I
remember my first visit was a very great experience for me.
Everyone was very friendly and made me feel at ease about having
work done on my teeth because as you know, it can be a nerve
wrecking experience. But everyone that worked on my teeth made me
feel comfortable.
I didn’t feel that great about my smile when I first came in
because I had a bad experience with another dentist that suggested
I get crowns put on two of my front teeth and I was not pleased
with the way they looked at all. I had also lost a couple of teeth
after root canals and I was not sure why.
So I found Dr. Martin and he made me a partial denture and I’m
very pleased with it. I am looking forward to getting a bridge or
implants to replace the partial and I am sure that I want to have
the work done here.
Mary Gibrall
To put it succinctly, Dr. Charles Martin and his staff just do
everything right. Since that doesn’t make very interesting reading,
I’ll elaborate a little bit more.
My professional background has been in customer relations
largely in working with physicians. Some of the things I have
encountered in physicians’ offices more often than not include
front office staff that hide behind glass partitions and don’t
acknowledge you when you arrive, difficulty in making an
appointment, waiting endlessly to see the doctor, and listening to
disgruntled staff just to name a few. So I was enormously surprised
to be treated so warmly by Dr. Martin’s staff from the very first
phone call when I made an appointment for a consultation. I was
hooked after the first visit.
During my first visit, everyone greeted me by my name and had
such positive things to say about the practice. Dr. Martin came
whistling (he also sings and hums around the office) into the exam
room with such enthusiasm and eagerness to meet me. More than his
warmth and easy-going manner was his confidence in his ability to
help me. I knew immediately I made the right decision to come to
this practice.
The dental work I had done was not exactly a walk in the park.
It included a dental implant, gum surgery and porcelain veneers. I
lost count of how many visits I had and hours I spent in the chair
during the eighteen months it took to complete. There were a couple
of complications along the way but Dr. Martin always assured me
that the extra steps and delays would be offset by a better end
result. He was right! I honestly don’t think any other dentist
would have been as meticulous and conscientious. And . . . when was
the last time your dentist called you after a procedure to see how
you were feeling?
Dr. Martin and his staff clearly understand that patient
satisfaction is a team effort. The office is such a warm and
welcoming environment that’s run very efficiently and
professionally. You will appreciate finding a dentist who is a
perfectionist and can sing in tune while creating your perfect
smile.
With Sincere Gratitude.
Michele M. Donoghue
My name is Michele and my husband’s name was Stephen. We both
presented Dr. Charles Martin & Associates with some difficult
challenges. My husband would avoid the dentist. His teeth had been
in bad shape for years. He had been on his own without health or
dental insurance. His priorities were those of survival, not dental
or health care.
Steve was diagnosed with cancer. He underwent chemotherapy and
radiation. The treatments and repeated emesis made already receding
gums worse with multiple oral mucosal ulcerations. The treatments
he received from Dr. Charles Martin and his staff began improving
his gums and mucosa.
I acquired my own dental and jaw problems from medical
treatments. I was an epileptic. I had to undergo cranial mapping
prior to epilepsy surgery. I had twelve EEG leads placed on my
brain through burr holes in my skull. They placed sphenoidal leads
through my TMJ on both sides of my jaw. I could not open my mouth
for eleven days. After they were removed, I could not open my mouth
wider than about 2-3 inches. The pain was excruciating.
Over time Dr. Martin was able to use bite blocks between my
teeth. He was able to gradually open my jaws with only minimal
pain. My teeth had developed multiple cavities from an inability to
brush and floss my teeth properly. Dr. Martin was able to
skillfully repair my teeth through my barely opening mouth. He was
careful and patient. He took great effort not to increase the pain
I was experiencing already.
My husband and I were very grateful to Dr. Martin and his staff
for the care we received. My husband passed away with an almost
intact oral mucosa. He appreciatively said that his mouth was the
only part of his body that didn’t hurt anymore.
My own mouth and jaw is back to normal thanks to the exceptional
care of Dr. Charles Martin and his staff.

Hardly a month ago, I walked into a casual business meeting and
jokingly asked, “Is this the spa?” You can guess the response I
received – a resounding “No” eased by smiles. I followed by saying,
“I’d rather be at the dentist!” We roared and got through our
meeting. It turned out to be one of those long days at work.
At 2:30 that day, I left the office to make my dental
appointment at Dr. Charles W. Martin, D.D.S. & Associates. I
wearily walked through the doors to find the lobby had experienced
a face-lift. It was beautiful. I told the receptionist that it
reminded me of an Italian bistro. She indicated that was the
intention!! Continuing with my joking mood, I asked where my
expresso was! Well, this ‘request’ was met – “We can make you one
if you’d like, or a cappuccino.” – she said showing me their new
machine. My spirits lifted even before I drank the delicious
brew.
My next question to the staff was, “Is this the spa or the
dentist?’ At which time I was offered a paraffin hand dip – I can
barely describe my surprise? I began to laugh, thinking this must
be a joke – after all this was the dentist’s office. I was assured
that this was no dream.
I was escorted back to a most relaxing room, had my paraffin
dip, rested in the chair and thoroughly enjoyed the next 15 minutes
in my peaceful surroundings. My day had been saved and my spirits
were elevated beyond my imagination. All that with a dental
cleaning to boot!
I shared with the dental staff my earlier comments during my
staff meeting at work and how my statements had come to life – Was
this my dentist or the spa? Thanks for blurring the line between
the two. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
At work the next day, I relayed this story – many wanted to
know, “Who is your dentist?” And I said, “Dr. Charles W. Martin,
D.D.S. & Associates.”
Is your phone ringing yet?
I can honestly say that I look forward to my next visit to the
“Dental Spa”!

I didn’t have any fears about going to the dentist. But moving
to the Richmond are forced me to find a new dentist. I sort of
stumbled onto Dr. Charles Martin & Associates while going
through the yellow pages. His ad was the only ad that took up an
entire page. So I read through the ad and was real impressed, but
still not convinced that this was the dentist for me. Everything
sounded good, but I just didn’t want to go with my first
choice.
So maybe a couple of months later, I received the exact same ad
in the mail that I had read in the yellow pages of the phone book.
I thought maybe this means something. I finally called and set up
an appointment for myself and also for my son.
I couldn’t have made a better choice. I think my son was the
first to see Dr. Gooss. He did an excellent job in explaining what
I needed to know in keeping my son’s teeth healthy. I was very
pleased and also my son who is six years old, looks for to going to
the dentist.
I received fillings, two extractions, and a root canal. I was
impressed with the way Dr. Gooss referred me to someone else to
perform my root canals. He actually does root canals, but thought I
needed a specialist for mine. That made me feel that I was getting
the best possible dental work. He knew that there was someone out
there that could perhaps do this procedure better, so he didn’t
hesitate to recommend me to that doctor. I think that’s when my
trust for this practice really became sealed.
I’ve also recommended my aunt to have her work performed here. I
would like to thank you for the marvelous job you have done so far.
I’m truly blessed to have found Dr. Charles Martin and
Associates.

When I moved to Richmond from Alaska I knew that I needed to
find a good dentist. I was not blessed with good teeth or gums and
they have always required a great deal of care. I loved my dentist
in Alaska and was very doubtful that I could ever replace him.
When I came to your office I feared that it might be too
expensive. I loved the artwork on the walls. The hygienists have
always been very good and the staff has gone out of their way to
help me with insurance issues.
I have had 2 major procedures one of which was a crown
replacement because there was decay underneath. The procedure was
not unpleasant, but has not entirely solved the problem as the
tooth has not yet decided to calm down.
The second procedure was an infection in my jaw, which also had
caused extensive tissue damage. This infection was rough on me and
I would have avoided it if I could have. I did have a reaction to
the anesthetics and would have chosen a different method if I had
known this would happen. On the bright side – the surgery was
brilliant and most successful.
I don’t have any horror stories. I do have more dental problems
than the average person. They have basically been handled by Dr.
Charles Martin & Associates. All the staff have been
outstanding.

GENTLE, FRIENDLY DENTISTRY.
That is truly what you will experience at Dr. Charles Martin’s
office. You will never be afraid to go to the dentist again! The
caring and excellent staff at this office will make each trip a
good experience. I personally would also add PERFECTION AND
PROFESSIONALISM.
My first visit to this office was in 1991 and I have continued
ever since with no trepidation about going. Each time I make my
appointment for the next time without hesitancy. I will say, I too
was apprehensive about going to a new dentist for the first time.
Although I took my children for their regular checkups, I myself
had not been going and definitely needed some dental work.
Dr. Martin performed my dental implant surgery and I have been
thankful for it ever since. My jaw line is very firm, eating is a
pleasure, and of course, I smile all the time. Each time I go to my
dental hygienist who is also a true professional, my teeth are
checked by him or one of his associates.
The entire staff is friendly, caring, and helpful. I find their
fees in keeping with other dentists, but their Perfection and
Professionalism are above anyone’s expectations.
I consider Dr. Martin one of my gifts in this lifetime. It was a
beautiful day that I walked into his office.

Dr. Charles Martin & Associates have been extremely helpful
and kind in taking care of my mouth. They were considerate of my
rather straitened circumstances and gave me reasonable costs.
I especially appreciate the real concern and care they have
shown me, especially in the past two years with Dr. Martin. I feel
as though I can trust and rely on Dr. Martin to do what is best
both in the appearance of my dentures, and especially with proper
nutrition, i.e. chewing, bite, alignment of teeth, etc.
I am much better and healthier since I found this dental office
to take care of my mouth!

Dear Dr. Charles Martin,
Thank you for your letter inviting me to tell my “dental story”;
your and your staff’s unparalleled level of interest in your
patients is what keeps me coming back to your office.
You may remember that when I first came in several years ago it
had been nearly two years since I had seen a dentist. I had had an
absolutely nightmarish experience with my previous dentist. When I
went in for a cleaning, I discovered that the sweet female dentist
whom I had been seeing had left and been replaced by a retired
military dentist, who not only hurt me but actually held me down in
the chair. I filed a complaint with both the police and the
Virginia Dental Board, but no action was ever taken. Believe me, my
faith in the dental profession was at an all-time low, but I knew I
had to take care of my teeth or I would be subjected to even more
pain later.
I researched several dentists in the phone book, on websites,
and by word of mouth. What drew me to your practice were two
things: First, a member of your staff gave me a free tour of your
office (no other practice would do that), and second, your ad in
the phone book was extremely informative, reassuring and thorough.
When I finally summoned up the courage for an exam and cleaning
your hygienist took a great deal of time with me, explaining what
they were doing – and alerting me to what they were going to do
every step of the way.
Your staff was very friendly and concerned about my welfare and
the dentist who did the exam actually took the time to talk with me
before putting his instruments in my mouth! Not only have I come
back ever since, I’ve brought my husband to see you as well, and
he’s another story all by himself . . .
Dave has a nearly Pavlovian fear of dentists that goes back to
his childhood experience with one who refused to use anesthesia in
order to save money (this was back in the early 1960’s). He used to
literally break into a sweat just talking about seeing a dentist,
and this is a man who was a technically rated scuba diver, a sport
in which controlling fear can mean life or death. I remember once
when we were dating he had to have a root canal and he found the
only dentist in Richmond who would do one using general anesthesia.
Plus for a time before we married he didn’t have dental insurance
or much money, so dental care was not high on the list of his
priorities.
I remember my childhood dentist had a sign in his office that
said, “Teeth are your friends – if you ignore them, they will do
away”. That is so true…by the time we got married and I had
convinced Dave to go to your dental practice, he needed seven
fillings, three crowns, and a very thorough cleaning that took two
visits. I am very proud of him, he has gotten everything done that
the doctor recommended and has kept a regular schedule of cleaning
and exams every 6 months.
Your finance administrator was extremely helpful in setting up a
payment plan. They even provided us with an itemized list of
payments when it came time to do our taxes. It was well worth every
penny we spent. Dave’s teeth look great, and more importantly, now
they will almost undoubtedly last him the rest of his life.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell our story.

Having once been a dental assistant, I am most aware of a caring
chair side manner. Dr. Martin and all of his staff were very kind
and empathetic. I give this office a glowing report!! I was
especially impressed when during a long treatment process, I was
offered a protein drink at lunch time.
I found Dr. Martin to be genuinely caring. He even changed the
radio station for me so that I could listen to Dr. Laura! His humor
relieved my anxiety and I found him to do his work in a “smooth
tender way”.
I initially came to this dental office because they used the
word “gentle” in their yellow page ad. Since I had avoided going to
the dentists at all costs until it was finally “unavoidable”
because my front teeth needed desperate repair, I was compelled to
call.
Dr. Martin and his team are phenomenal as well as professional.
I was a nervous wreck about the dental work ahead of me, but they
made the procedures very comfortable for me; and Thank God for
their sense of humor! And my teeth look great!!
Sandra Martin
My name is Sandra and I would like to share with you why I
wanted to get help with my smile. First of all, I am a smile
person. I look at everyone smile. When I talk with you or come in
contact with you the smile is the first thing I see. Well I found
out there are a lot of other people in this world that notice other
people’s smiles too.
It was baseball season and all of us mothers were sitting on the
bench watching our children practice. And one of the mothers asked
me if I smoked. I was shocked and I said, “you’ve got me mixed up
with my sister, she smokes”. She said to me “your teeth are so
yellow I thought you smoked too”. Needless to say that it bothered
me so bad all I could do was worry about my smile. I didn’t want to
be around anyone. And when I was around others I would cover my
mouth so others would not notice my smile. All I could think of is
everyone thought the same thing when I smiled, “How yellow her
teeth are”!
One day I was looking at the newspaper and I came across an ad
about having a brighter and whiter smile with a number, so I called
and made an appointment to be seen. I wanted to see if Dr. Charles
Martin could help me. When I walked into the office it had a
pleasant atmosphere and the staff was so warm and inviting. They
made me feel so comfortable before, during and after my whitening
procedure. I knew in my heart I had come to the right place. I came
out of there with a beautiful smile and great confidence.
I am so pleased and thankful that I made the choice to get a
prettier smile with Dr. Charles Martin D.D.S., & Associates. I
encourage others to do the same. If I had it to do again, I
certainly would, only much sooner.

Orthodontia plus the loss of four teeth due to a golf club
accident lead to my teeth shifting (a total of eight teeth were
gone). I should have had a bridge installed after the golf
accident, but I was afraid of dentists – not just the pain, but
recriminations for neglecting my teeth. Further, I was
single-parenting two children, and had no money for a dentist.
By around 1992, gum disease was evident, and I began loosing
teeth one-by-one. I could only eat soft food, and was afraid to
brush my teeth too hard for fear of losing another one. I knew my
smile was ugly and I tended to hide behind my hand when I spoke. I
looked at pictures of me ten years earlier, and wondered what
happened to my pretty smile. By 2000, my family and friends were
urging me to see a dentist. So recriminations or not, I had to find
a dentist.
I found Dr. Charles Martin in the Yellow Pages. The ad was
clear, concise and extremely informative. I paid Dr. Martin my
first visit in September 2001. There were no recriminations, no
“how could you let yourself get this bad?” Just, “here is the
problem, and here’s how we can resolve it”. If Dr. Martin had
reprimanded me, I might not have returned.
Dr. Martin recommended total extraction of my teeth and placing
some implants in my lower jaw to attach a customized denture to.
Although my husband and I definitely had “sticker shock” when he
explained the fees, we realized the treatment must be done.
While the actual surgery took several hours, I don’t recall
being in much pain – I had more discomfort from having my mouth
open so long and so many hands in my mouth. During the entire
surgery process Dr. Martin and his staff were professional and
caring. Dr. Martin even called me the next day (a Saturday) to see
how I was doing.
Over the next year and a half and many visits and procedures, I
came to know “Dr. Charley” (as I call him now) and his entire
staff. They are extremely professional and epitomize “friendly and
gentile” dentistry. We have become friends too, and there have been
several occasions we have enjoyed uproarious laughter in his
office.
I would recommend Dr. Martin to anyone needing a dentist, but
especially to those needing dental restoration. Dr. Martin is
extremely knowledgeable – he attends several seminars annually to
assure he’s updated on the latest techniques and procedures. He is
also very competent. I was never uneasy about what was occurring in
my mouth. And, he was always there at every step of the
process.
In summary, I felt totally cared for by both Dr. Martin and his
staff. They genuinely wanted this implant and denture process to
work. And the finale to all of this is my beautiful smile – the
smile I had when I was twenty.
Thank you Dr. Martin and thank all of you who helped.

I had skipped going to the dentist for so many years because I
am petrified of it. I really just don’t like anybody working in my
mouth. I had lots of dental problems including gum disease. My
husband and I heard over the television that Dr. Charles Martin and
Associates did the laser here, so that is what initially brought us
to this office. I though the laser would be much easier on the
gums.
I’ve had numerous treatments by Dr. Charles Martin. I had quite
a few crowns, veneers, bridges and some fillings. You name it; I’ve
had it done. I think my teeth look great. Dr. Martin did a
beautiful job and I am very pleased with my smile.
I rate this office a 10 plus! All the staff have been so nice
and make you feel right at home. If they didn’t I wouldn’t have
come back. This is just a wonderful dental office.
Dr. Charles Martin and Associates is superior to any other
dental office that I have ever used. The staff has been so nice and
sweet and the doctors are so great. Dr. Martin always made me feel
very comfortable. I think he is a great dentist and I would
recommend him to everyone. I couldn’t ask for any better service, I
really couldn’t.
When we were young and we went to the dentist, they never numbed
your teeth and it was a horrible experience. So I have always been
scared of dentists. I was a wimp. I would only go to the dentist
when I absolutely had to. But here, at Dr. Charles Martin and
Associates it has been so different. You don’t feel any pain and it
is quite comfortable. I definitely recommend it to anyone. I came
here because I thought he was one of the top dentists. I just think
he really does do wonderful work and I am quite satisfied.
I rate myself a true fan of the dentistry at Dr. Charles Martin
and Associates. I think they do superior work and I think the
entire staff has just been wonderful. They really have.

I had dark fillings that I wanted to have removed and I knew
that I had all sorts of things that were not right with my teeth.
Some of my teeth were misaligned and they just needed a good going
over. I might add all of which has now been fixed thanks to Dr.
Charles Martin.
I just kind of wore the phone book out looking for the right
dentist trying to get up enough courage to make the initial call
because I knew that I needed a lot of help. Dr. Martin’s yellow
page ad had a handsome photo of his staff and the office
description sounded like what I needed in a dentist.
The first time I visited Dr. Charles Martin & Associates I
thought it was such a beautiful office and the staff were so
friendly and just greeted me right in. Lisa was there from the very
beginning and she always made me feel so comfortable.
I told Dr. Martin that I had a lot of bad experiences previously
in dental offices so I was really dreading the procedures. However,
Dr. Martin and Lisa discussed all details beforehand in a very
friendly chat with my husband there and that really eased my
fears.
I chose to do my treatment with long hours of appointments as we
travel a distance to come here and I would say my comfort level was
about as good as dentists get. I remember that they always gave me
a pillow when I needed it for my neck. And after the appointments
we just always went out and ate so I must say I was always able to
eat afterwards. Now I didn’t always go straight from the office to
eat, sometimes I did a little shopping first and then we went out
to dinner so that worked great for us.
I have been to a lot of dentists but I have never been around
such a great staff of wonderful ladies. Dr. Martin is just always
nice as can be, he gives you a hug and a little hand squeeze to
make you feel more relaxed. This office just rates the best with
me.
I am very pleased with my smile now. My husband is always
telling me that my teeth look great and he is so complimentary and
so glad that I had the work done.
Dr. Martin’s staff has really helped ease my dental fears. When
you get there they are just always so smiley and nice. That really
relaxes you so that you are just not ringing your hands when you go
back to see the dentist.
I would tell people not to be afraid to visit this office. They
make you feel really comfortable and their dental work is so very
good. I intend to remain a patient here and I am glad that I choose
them from their phone book ad. Dr. Charles Martin and Associates is
the best dental office that I have ever been to.

My past experiences with dentists were very painful since my
baby teeth had many cavities and lacked enamel due to poor prenatal
care by my natural mother. Then my permanent teeth came in well but
VERY SENSITIVE so even hygiene visits were painful.
In 1968 when I was a teenager, I had 3 cavities in my permanent
teeth. It felt like that dentist was drilling through the roof of
my mouth to fill the cavities with silver fillings. He had to use 4
shots of novacaine per tooth, schedule 4 separate visits, and even
with novacaine I was crying the whole time he worked.
I came to Dr. Charles Martin’s office in June 1982. I went
because I received a flyer advertising his office as “catering to
cowards”. I really avoided regular dental visits due to my fear of
pain.
My first visit went very well, didn’t hurt and Dr. Martin made
me very comfortable. He was friendly and gently reminded me to
brush and floss regularly. He always provides dental products like
toothbrushes, floss, and toothpaste. His staff were the first to
advise me to use a child size brush since my mouth is very small to
clean my teeth more thoroughly.
In 1983 I got braces at the tender age of 30 years, and Dr.
Martin pulled 4 teeth WITH NO PAIN AND I WAS AWAKE too! He was the
first dentist to do this since I had IV sedation for my wisdom
teeth several years earlier with an oral surgeon.
Dr. Martin did not need to use IV sedation. I had no trouble
with his pulling 4 teeth in one visit. There was also no pain or
trouble afterwards. My braces went on at the orthodontist and I
wore them 4 years. My smiles is now great since my teeth are not
protruding nor overcrowded in my mouth.
My dental insurance doesn’t adequately reimburse Dr. Martin;
however I happily pay the small difference since it is worth the
extra expense to visit the dentist without fearing the visit.
Of course over the last 22 years, the technology at Dr. Martin’s
office have improved immensely since 1982 and my visits are always
pleasant and painless. I believe it’s because of Dr. Martin’s
advice that I have not had any cavities since I’ve been going to
his office. During my hygiene visits, I am provided with a warm
blanket, numbing gel to keep any sensitive areas from hurting, and
I have also been give headsets with music to keep my mind
occupied.
I have recommended Dr. Charles Martin over the years to several
of my friends and associates, a few of which have gone to see him.
I received a credit voucher for these referrals. I always try to go
for hygiene appointments when Dr. Martin is working because I like
for him to be the one I consistently see for my oral evaluations.
Dr. Martin treats me kindly and is sincerely interested in my well
being, work, interest . . . everything that makes me an individual.
He remember things one wouldn’t think he would; I think this is due
to his commitment to each patient as a unique person.
Mr. William Boyd
The Journey
Going to the dentist was right up there with the dreaded annual
physical until one weekend a few years ago. Years of neglect had
finally taken its toll with teeth and gums staging a rebellion,
which turned in to a long and painful weekend. After searching
through the phonebook a random selection of Dr. Charles Martin and
Associates resulted in an appointment the following week. The pain
was displaced by embarrassment for a dental professional who would
now scrutinize the long neglected teeth with who know how many
other individuals in Dr. Martins practice to see.
The fateful day arrived with the personal and physical
discomfort each about equal in intensity. After a brief discussion
and a look at the problem the first comment was “let’s get this
taken care of right away”, and so it was. This was the beginning of
what became known as “The Journey” toward improved dental health
and hygiene for me.
What is so amazing about this story? On a scale of Good to Worse
with one being Good and ten being the Worst, the condition of my
gums and teeth would have been generously considered a ten. Despite
this condition the focus became how to help the patient not how to
embarrass or make the patient feel uncomfortable about the obvious.
From that day forward and for a period of over five years numerous
procedures took place which included dental implants, gum surgery,
cosmetic replacement, and eventually a complete restoration of
teeth which look and feel better that one could even imagine?
